Why I Don’t Mind Trendy Food

Food trends.  There are new ones each year.  Like kale everything or avocado toast.  A lot of food critics, food writers, some bloggers, and people in general, like to rail on trendy food. Why I Don't Mind Trendy Foods | Life Healthfully Lived

“Oh, you’re only eating that because it’s so popular.”

“You know that food has been around for years.  It’s nothing new.”

“Food companies are just trying to make as much money as possible by selling overpriced trendy food items.”

“It doesn’t even taste that good.”

Those things might all be true, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say, I really don’t mind trendy food.

Food trends give us the chance to learn about new food, try new things, see if there is a food that works for us.  It makes food that might not have been accessible to everyone easy to find.

Take chia seeds for example.

Chia seeds were the trendy food a few years ago.  This little seed that was once relegated to chia pets was everywhere.  In grocery stores, in snacks, in recipes.  I even have a few chia pudding recipes on the blog.  If chia seeds hadn’t become so popular, I wouldn’t have discovered I really like them and they have a lot of health benefits that make me feel great.

So, while trendy food might annoy people and make a lot of money for food companies, I don’t think they’re all bad.  It’s fun to try new things and see if you like a new food.  Who knows what you’ll find next?
